SHIF covers health, not wealth. Build your own safety net alongside it in a money market fund at around 9% a year, so a hospital bill never wipes out your savings.
SHIF replaced NHIF in October 2024. Salaried workers pay 2.75% of gross monthly pay, with a minimum of KES 300 a month and no upper limit. It is an allowable deduction, taken off your gross before PAYE is worked out, which slightly lowers your income tax.
How SHIF is worked out
The Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF) is 2.75% of your gross monthly pay, with a minimum of KES 300 and no upper cap. That last point is the big change from NHIF, which was a banded table that maxed out at KES 1,700 a month. Under SHIF, higher earners now pay more:
| Gross monthly pay | SHIF (2.75%) | vs old NHIF |
|---|---|---|
| KES 10,000 | KES 300 (minimum) | KES 400 |
| KES 30,000 | KES 825 | KES 900 |
| KES 50,000 | KES 1,375 | KES 1,200 |
| KES 100,000 | KES 2,750 | KES 1,700 (cap) |
| KES 200,000 | KES 5,500 | KES 1,700 (cap) |

SHIF protects your health, not your wealth
SHIF helps cover medical bills, but it will not build your savings. The two work best together: health cover for emergencies, and your own cushion for everything else. Keep that cushion in a money market fund earning around 9% a year, where it stays within easy reach but still grows. See how fast it builds with the money market fund calculator.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much is SHIF on a KES 50,000 salary?
SHIF is 2.75% of gross pay, so on KES 50,000 you pay KES 1,375 a month. There is no upper cap, so the deduction keeps rising with your salary.
What is the minimum SHIF contribution?
The minimum is KES 300 a month. Anyone whose 2.75% works out to less than KES 300 — for example a gross pay below about KES 10,909 — pays the KES 300 floor.
Is there a maximum SHIF contribution?
No. Unlike NHIF, which capped at KES 1,700 a month, SHIF has no upper limit. At 2.75% of gross, higher earners pay more: KES 2,750 on KES 100,000, KES 5,500 on KES 200,000.
When did SHIF replace NHIF?
The Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF) replaced the National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) in October 2024, under the new Social Health Authority.
Is SHIF deducted before PAYE?
Yes. SHIF is an allowable deduction, taken off your gross pay before PAYE is calculated, which slightly lowers your income tax.
Is this SHIF calculator free?
Yes, it is completely free, ad-free, and uses the current SHIF rate of 2.75% with the KES 300 minimum.
